Dear Law School

Why do you feel the need to discourage students at such a vital time as in the middle of revision? Why was there any need to briefly destroy my self-confidence - could you not have waited until July when you could have done it in one go? In future please consider students' feeling, particularly geeky overachievers like me, when releasing coursework marks in the middle of the revision period.

Kind regards

Susie Law School.

Yes, the coursework marks came out yesterday. No mine was not good. In fact it was the lowest mark I have EVER EVER got in ANYTHING academic. This is highly upsetting since I know I can do better and my mock assessments prove it. It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things and a distinction is still highly possible, however I am SO ANGRY at myself for doing such a bad job. Hmpf.

oh no! did you actually do badly by anyone else's standards though?! or just not get a distinction? Did they give you some helpful feedback on why they didnt grade you higher? maybe you can work on it for the next bit of coursework so you know how to improve?

Bet I did worse than you. :S

Most people seem to have received between 50 (lots) and 70 (swots), but the difference between the two marks in aggregate is just 1% of final result. So you're still on track for that distinction, Susie!

The distinction is for you. Unless you are aiming for a firm or a set of Chambers which actually requires it, it will not assist much in my experience. By this stage firms and sets ought to be able to judge your ability without reference to a set of exams which every single person who interviews you will only have wanted to pass.

I say this in the hope that you take some pressure off yourself. If your future colleagues/employers require a distinction then it is only on the basis that they want people who are prepared to put work above all sensible considerations. They are sad and if you follow them down this particular path, ultimately you will be too.

Having said all that, if self-motivation can get you a distinction that's excellent. Just get the priorities straight, is all.

Like the blog. Would like a link as well...

Dare I ask what you actually got?!
I thought that the marks were pretty low all round - surprisingly so in fact!

What mark did you get?

I just got a mark for a piece of coursework back I was absolutely gutted with (particularly as I had killed 70 hours of my life for it) :(

My seminar tutor has offered to go through it with me and tell me exactly where I went wrong though, as he knows from our seminars that I do the work. I'm also meeting the marker on Wednesday. Maybe you could try that?

Well I know what went wrong - in trying to cut the blasted thing down to 1500 words I cut out all the good stuff and left in the stuff that wasn't really needed.

I don't particularly want to volunteer my actual grade but suffice to say that it was bad not only on my standards but on everyone elses.

I am a swot, ergo I am gutted not to have done better, but as someone already mentioned, the distinction is just for me, it doesn't make any difference to my TC etc, but I just like to do well... *geek*

Thanks for all the kind messages you guys!

So you'll post your good grades but not your bad grades?! That's a bit arrogant. Or something. Well I don't exactly know what it is, but it's certainly presenting a bit of a one-sided view of yourself if you only tell your marks when you do well!

Susie Law School said...

Arrogant eh?

Well think what you like but you don't have to read the blawg if you don't like it.

If it makes you feel better - I got 54%.

I hope you are happy now that you've made me feel bad.

OK. So you passed. That is NOT bad compared to anyone else's standards! You passed! Come on. That's all you have to do. I know that YOUR standards are different, but 99% of the rest of people on this course are just aiming to pass. So by all of that 99%'s standards, you did great.

As accidental law student says, most people got between 50% (which is where most people's marks were) and 70% (very few people got this high). You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. 50% is a pass, failing is what's considered bad by most people.

So you'll post your opinion but not your name? That's a bit cowardly. Or something.

And while we're being all honest, I got 50%, which looked to be about the mean average mark anyway, so Susie actually did quite well.

Exactly ! I dont have a blogger account so I can't leave my blog name because I don't have one to leave. And anyone you are both writing under pseudonyms anyway, I don't see either of your full names on your blogs (which is absolutely fine, but then does it really matter if your commenter is called Anonymous or HumptyDumpty3?)

Anyway I was trying to say that Susie is being hard on herself and has done well. I thought I did say that. But in case it didn't come across, I really & truly don't think your grade is bad, and although you can think what you like of it yourself, you would be wrong to put yourself down by thinking that everyone else thought it was a bad grade. Noone thinks that that's a bad grade.

And I weighed in with a not-much-better 56%, so I think we can all safely say that generally intelligent people rather underperformed at this stage of the course. I'd like to say I'm saving myself for the exams next week but I rather fear not, whereas I am 110% certain that Legally Blonde here will do herself just as proudly as she deserves to :)

You hang on in there - that 54% will be irrelevant in the grand scheme of things if you achieve a Distinction overall (which you will).

And with regard to all this "Ugh!That's-not-rubbish-how-do-you-think-that-makes-all-the-thick-people-feel!" nonsense: that's so primary school and completely irrelevant. If Susie is used to achieving highly and consistently aims highly, then getting a "poor" mark is relative to her. I don't think she ever said that she thought anyone else considered it to be a bad grade or that she thought that 54% is a bad grade in and of itself. In fact, I suspect that even if the whole world told her it was brilliant and it was the top mark in the year she would still have been understandably disappointed because it isn't a mark at a level she is used to achieving.

I think Anonymous may have missed the point here?

Thanks Josie, this is EXACTLY what I was trying to get across but words failed me... head full of law!

Hey! New here, yeah just what you all need a new blogger. Susie, I am an overachiever like yourself and though I am late with this post, continue to do your thing!
